HISTORY


The Original Church (1899-1914)






1890 Services held in homes.
1894 Church site at 2nd & Cincinnati purchased from Perryman, Chief of the Creek Indians. The lot was later sold.
1898 Church site purchased at 3rd & Frankfort, block 115.
1899 Eucharist celebrated for first time in Holy Family Church marking the beginning of the parish.
1905 Diocese of Oklahoma City/Tulsa created.
1906 Fr. John G. Heiring became pastor.
1912 Church site purchased at 8th & Boulder. Construction began.
1914 Present church completed and dedicated.
1916 $50,000 construction debt paid off.
1924 25th Jubilee of parish. Holy Family published a book which included the history, all of the officers of organizations within the parish, and several pictures of the church’s construction.
1925 Cardinal Hayes consecrated the church.
1931 Holy Family named a co-cathedral. The cathedra (the bishop’s chair) was installed.
1949 Holy Family Golden Jubilee celebration.
1955 Diocese of Oklahoma City/Tulsa Golden Jubilee.
1973 Msgr. Ganter, former Chancellor of the Galveston-Houston Diocese, ordained First Bishop of Tulsa
1974 75th Jubilee celebration. Fr. Paul Donovan redecorated the cathedral.
1981 Fr. James Halpine renovated the cathedral towers.
1982 Holy Family named a historic landmark.
1982-3 Fr. Halpine renovated the basement, installed the new organ, and constructed the south entrance.
1992 Fr. Halpine renovated the cathedral interior.
1999 Fr. Gier opens a year of Centennial Celebration.
2000 Centennial Celebration ends with Gala 2000, a gathering featuring Archbishop John R. Quinn, Archbishop Eusebius Beltran, and Bishop Andrew McDonald.
2005 Msgr. Gier begins a major rennovation of the interior and exterior of the Cathedral.
